Test your keyboard and gamepad in seconds
TapTest is a free online keyboard tester and controller checker. It's handy when you buy a used keyboard or controller, troubleshoot a key that stopped working, check for ghosting and n-key rollover, or just enjoy the sound of a satisfying keypress. Keys turn amber while held and keep a green outline once confirmed, so you can see at a glance which inputs still need checking.
Layouts and controllers
Switch the on-screen keyboard between US QWERTY (ANSI), UK QWERTY (ISO), German QWERTZ and French AZERTY from the layout menu, which is handy if your physical board isn't a US one. On the Gamepad tab, the diagram redraws to match an Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo controller, and you can turn on the key-history log to review the exact sequence of everything you pressed.
How to use it
On the Keyboard tab, press each key and watch it respond, and the readout shows the exact event.code, event.key and keyCode your browser reports. Hold several keys at once to test rollover. On the Gamepad tab, connect a controller, press a button to wake it, and every button, trigger and thumbstick responds live. Turn the sound on with the speaker button for a mechanical click on each press.

Frequently asked questions
How do I test my keyboard online?
Press any key. It lights up while held and keeps a green outline afterwards to show it has registered. Work across the whole board to confirm every key. If a key never lights up, it may be faulty or intercepted by your operating system.
Which controllers are supported?
Xbox controllers, PlayStation DualShock 4 and DualSense, Nintendo Switch Pro controllers, and most generic PC gamepads work over USB or Bluetooth in Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers. They share a standard button mapping, and the on-screen diagram redraws to match the type you connect.
Which keyboard layouts can I choose?
US QWERTY (ANSI), UK QWERTY (ISO), German QWERTZ and French AZERTY. Because testing works by physical key position, highlighting is correct whichever layout's legends you display.
Is any of my data recorded?
No. All detection happens locally in your browser using the standard KeyboardEvent and Gamepad APIs. Nothing you press is stored on a server or sent anywhere. See our privacy policy.
What is ghosting and rollover?
Ghosting is when a keyboard fails to register some keys pressed at the same time. Hold several keys together and count how many appear under "Held now". A keyboard with full n-key rollover (NKRO) shows them all.
