Why is a key on my keyboard not working?

One dead key is annoying, but it is usually fixable, and often it is not a hardware fault at all.
First, confirm which key is really failing
Before opening anything up, check what your computer actually receives. Open the keyboard tester and press the key in question. If it lights up and registers, the key hardware is fine and the problem is software or an application setting. If nothing happens at all, the issue is more likely physical. This one check saves a lot of wasted effort, because at least half of "broken" keys are not broken at all.
Common causes and how to fix them
Dust, crumbs or debris under the key. This is the most common cause of a mushy or unresponsive key. Power down, turn the keyboard over and give it a firm shake, then use a blast of compressed air around and under the keycap. On most mechanical boards you can gently pry the keycap off with a keycap puller (or carefully with a flat tool) and clean underneath.
A worn or stuck switch. Mechanical switches are rated for tens of millions of presses, but they can fail early or collect grime. If a cleaned key still misfires, the switch itself may be worn. On a hot-swap board you can pull the switch and drop in a spare; on a soldered board it means desoldering, or living with a remap.
Filter Keys or Sticky Keys (Windows). These accessibility features can make keys feel dead or require a long hold before they register. In Windows, go to Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard and switch off Filter Keys and Sticky Keys. This is a surprisingly frequent culprit after someone holds Shift for eight seconds by accident and enables the shortcut.
A remapping or macro app. Tools like PowerToys, AutoHotkey, Karabiner, or your keyboard's own software can silently reassign or disable a key. If one specific key does the wrong thing (or nothing), check whatever key-customisation software you have installed and look for a rule covering it.
Driver problems. Occasionally a keyboard driver becomes corrupted after an update. In Windows Device Manager, right-click your keyboard under "Keyboards", choose Uninstall device, then restart. Windows reinstalls a fresh driver automatically.
Connection issues. For a wired board, try a different USB port and avoid unpowered hubs. For wireless, replace or recharge the batteries, re-pair the Bluetooth connection, and move closer to the receiver. A flaky connection often looks like random dropped keys rather than one dead key.
Liquid damage. If a drink went in, unplug immediately, turn the board upside down, and let it dry for at least 48 hours before powering on. Sugary liquids leave sticky residue that needs cleaning off the affected switches.
It might not be broken. It might be ghosting. If keys only fail to register when you are holding several others at the same time (common while gaming), that is not a fault. It is a rollover limitation. See our guide on ghosting and N-key rollover.
When to repair and when to replace
If cleaning and the software checks above do not help and the switch is genuinely dead, weigh the cost. A hot-swap mechanical board is cheap and quick to fix with a spare switch. A membrane or laptop keyboard usually is not worth repairing for a single key, since an external USB keyboard is often cheaper than the part and the labour. Either way, run the tester again afterwards to confirm every key registers before you call it fixed.
