How to test a game controller on PC

Before you blame the game, it is worth confirming that every button, trigger and stick on your controller actually works.
Whether you have just bought a used gamepad, suspect stick drift, or a button feels unreliable, it is quick to check. Here are three ways to test a controller on a PC, from easiest to most detailed.
Method 1: an online gamepad tester (fastest)
The quickest option needs no installation. Open the gamepad tester, connect your controller by USB or Bluetooth, and press any button to wake it. Every button, trigger and thumbstick shows up live on screen, and the diagram matches the type you plug in, whether Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo. This works in Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers using the browser's built-in Gamepad support, and nothing you press leaves your device.
Method 2: the Windows built-in tool
Windows has a hidden controller test panel. Press Windows+R, type joy.cpl and press Enter to open "Game Controllers". Select your device, click Properties, and you will get a test tab that shows button presses and axis movement. It is plain but reliable, and useful for confirming Windows itself sees the controller correctly.
Method 3: Steam
If you use Steam, go to Settings → Controller. Steam has excellent controller support, shows you the detected device, and lets you test and remap inputs. It is also the easiest way to get a PlayStation or Nintendo controller working smoothly in games that expect an Xbox-style pad.
What to check
Buttons and triggers: press every face button, bumper, trigger, stick click and the d-pad, and confirm each one responds. Triggers should read as a smooth range, not just on/off.
Thumbsticks and drift: let go of both sticks and watch the on-screen position. If a stick reports movement while you are not touching it, that is stick drift, a very common wear problem, especially on older controllers. A tiny amount near the centre is normal; anything that pushes the reading noticeably off-centre will cause characters or the camera to move on their own in games.
Vibration: if your controller and browser support it, test the rumble motors so you know they still fire.
Fixing common problems
Not detected at all: for a wired pad, try another USB port and a known-good cable (some cables are charge-only and carry no data). For Bluetooth, remove and re-pair the device.
Buttons mapped wrongly: most modern pads use a "standard mapping", but some third-party controllers report inputs in a different order. Steam's controller settings or the game's own remap screen will sort this out.
Drift: a firmware update sometimes helps, and some controllers let you set a larger dead zone in software to hide minor drift. Severe drift usually means the stick module needs replacing.
Once everything checks out, you are good to game. If a button or stick fails the test, you have caught it before it cost you a match, and you know exactly what to get repaired or replaced.
